Fresno State Mini Corps students, Marina Nuño and Daniel Robles were selected to participate in The University of Pennsylvania's Minority Serving Institution’s (MSI) weekend. Each year UPenn invites students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges, and Asian American & Pacific Islander Serving Institutions to nominate two of their best college juniors who might be interested in the field of education (K-12 or higher education) to join them at Penn for a weekend dedicated to learning about graduate school. This will be the 11th year of the program.
Students get a chance to learn about Penn and graduate school, meet current students, meet faculty, participate in classes, and enjoy the city of Philadelphia. The Mini Corps program was recently awarded a building capacity grant by the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions. Drs. Cathy Yun, Lisa Bennett and Laura Alamillo in the Literacy, Early, Bilingual, and Special Education department are principal investigators with Lilly Lomeli and Jose Mejia. The grant will assist on strengthening the Mini Corps program in the area of Common Core and CSET training. Mini Corps was recognized by UPenn as an exemplary program in the field of teacher education.
