Mathematics and Science Teacher Initiative

Flight Sim School Funded by MSTI

The Mathematics and Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI) at Fresno State is funded through the CSU Chancellor’s Office to increase the number of fully-credentialed and well-educated middle school and high school mathematics and science teachers. In partnership with MSTI, Community Based Learning offers a variety of professional development and classroom opportunities for Liberal Studies students to develop expertise in STEM and to pique their interest in obtaining an additional credential in teaching mathematics and/or science.  Program activities are designed to make a positive impact on middle school student achievement at the same time. Projects include the following:

Saturday STEM Academy: Join a team that is guided by highly regarded STEM educators to develop a problem-based unit that integrates math, science, engineering and technology. Teams will teach their units in high-need middle schools.

STEM Teams for Middle Schools: Join a team that will learn how to implement STEM after school curriculum with middle school students. During 2011 teams will learn about and develop FIRST robotics teams at rural middle schools..

Math Tutors in High Need Schools: Training is offered to further develop your expertise in teaching mathematics. Field experience (15 hours per week) as a math tutor for up to eight weeks will be interspersed with additional training.
