If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at Faculty Reserve Services (559) 278-3972, ereserves@csufresno.edu. If you wish to put or use media (music, video) on reserve, please contact Music & Media at (559) 278-2158.
Q. What is the Reserve Collection?
A. Electronic reserves are materials that have been placed on the Web for student use. Access to these materials is available 24 hours a day, is restricted to current Fresno State registered class students, and may not be shared with others. The class instructor will provide the class with a password to access their course on electronic reserves.
Print and Media materials are controlled course readings for ready access by Fresno State students. These traditional materials are in high demand by a large number of students, therefore materials lend for a limited period of time (usually 2 hours, 1 day, 3 day, or 1 week loan periods). Print reserve materials are located in Circulation on the 1st floor. Media reserve materials are located in Music & Media on the 3rd floor.
The media formats that can be placed on reserve are cd, cd-rom, vhs cassette, and dvd. Almost all Media reserve items will circulate for 72 hours. A small number of media items that are in high demand for classroom use will circulate to students for 4 hours. A listing of these high demand media materials is available from Music & Media.
Listening and viewing equipment are available in Music & Media on the 3rd floor. To check-out Print and Media reserve materials the student must have a current Fresno State identification card with library barcode. In most cases a maximum of one item per course may be checked out to a student at one time. Late fees begin to accumulate immediately if materials are not returned at the specified time or date.
Q. How do I place items on reserve?
A. For electronic reserve: Print out and complete the Faculty Reserve Services Course Reserve List form and bring it to the Circulation desk on the 1st floor with your materials to be scanned. You may also email document files to ereserves@csufresno.edu along with the course and item bibliographic information.
For print reserves: Print out the Faculty Reserve Services Course Reserve List form and bring it to the Circulation desk on the 1st floor with your materials. It's that easy!
For media reserves: Please contact Music & Media at 559-278-2158 (claudiar@csufresno.edu).
Q. I want to help speed up the e-reserves scanning process. How can I speed things up?
A. Providing a clean copy of the article or chapter (with no notes written on it) that includes the title page and the copyright page of the original source really speeds things up.
You can also load files onto e-reserves using your administrative login and password; once you have done this, please notify Faculty Reserve Services at ereserves@csufresno.edu or by calling 559-278-3972 so that we can review the copyright status before activating it so students can see it.
Q. How long can students check out reserve items?
A. Professors choose the check out period. Choices are: 2 hours, 1 day, 3 days, or 1 week.
Q. How long will it take for reserve items to be available to students?
A. Reserve materials are added on a first-come, first-served basis. During the first month of each semester it may take several days or a few weeks before the material is ready, but once the beginning rush is over items are usually placed on reserve by the next business day. If you have a significant amount of materials to scan, please allow us as much lead time as possible because of the workload involved.
Q. How many pages of a book or journal can be added to electronic reserves?
A. All four factors must be considered when following the Fair Use Doctrine (the purpose of the use, the nature of the work, the amount used, and the effect of the use on the potential market) so this is always a difficult question to answer. A complete list of our policies is available on the Faculty Reserve Services Guidelines page. Please look over your materials and carefully consider what would benefit your students.
Q. How many items can be placed on reserve?
A. Traditional reserve items are not limited. Up to 50 items per course per semester may be placed on electronic reserves.
Q. Can books from the Madden Library be placed on reserve?
A. Yes. Simply email ereserves@csufresno.edu with the titles, call numbers, circulation time (2 hours, 1 day, 3 days, or 1 week,) and course information.
Q. Can books from other libraries be placed on reserve?
A. No. Only books owned by CSU Fresno or professor's personal copies may be placed on reserve.
Q. Do you have a copy of the textbook for my class on reserve?
A. The library does not purchase textbooks. The professor may put a personal copy of the textbook on reserve.
Q. Will the library acquire books for courses?
A. The Library purchases materials in support of classes and research on this campus. Suggestions for purchases are always welcome.
Q. How do I get an electronic reserves account?
A. Faculty can use this link to create an electronic reserves account. You can have multiple courses under one electronic reserves account. Please contact us if you have any questions or need help.
Q. How do I get a password for my electronic reserves course?
A. Passwords are created as new courses are created. Professors can choose their own passwords for their courses and should provide that password to their students.
Q. How long are items left on reserve?
A. As long as they are needed. At the end of each semester professors are notified by email when materials will be removed. Reply back if course materials need to be carried over to the next semester.
Q. Do I need to fill out the Bibliographic Worksheet on the back of the Faculty Reserve Form?
A. Only if the bibliographic information is not provided in another way. Bibliographic info can be: written on the photocopy of the article / chapter, a photocopy of the book's title page and verso, or an email with the information.
Q. I need to change the title of some of the documents on my electronic reserves course page. Is that possible?
A. Yes, email the changes to ereserves@csufresno.edu
Q. I found a typo on my syllabus. Can you replace the old one with this new one?
A. Yes! Once a course is created and the documents have been added changes are usually very easy to make.
