Food and drink pose a risk to library collections, equipment, and furnishings. To minimize damage to collections and maintain a clean environment conducive to quiet study, the Library has established the following food policy, effective 16 August 2010. We ask that you: act responsibly when consuming food and drink in the Library; be considerate of others studying near you; and dispose of your trash.

Award-winning Librarian
Julie Moore, librarian in the Technical Services Department of the Henry Madden Library, is the 2010 winner of the Nancy B. Olson Award. This award recognizes a librarian who has made significant contributions to the advancement and understanding of audiovisual cataloging. As the plaque honoring Julie states, she was selected for significant and diverse contributions to audiovisual cataloging and catalogers at the local, state, and national levels over more than twenty years.

The Library's Millionth Visitor
Amanda Tang, a junior nursing major who confesses she “lives” in the Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno, is the new building’s millionth visitor. Tang was honored as she walked through the front door just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 17. Library Associate Dean Dave Tyckoson presented her with a gift basket filled with student-produced foods from the campus’ Gibson Farm Market, a Starbucks gift card, and the book Where the Ox Does Not Plow by Fresno State Professor Emeritus of Music Manuel Peña.

The Pulitzer Prizes
Established in 1917, the Pulitzer Prize is one of the highest achievements awarded for American contributions to newspaper journalism, literature, and music. Pulitzer Prize winners
Established in 1917, the Pulitzer Prize is one of the highest achievements awarded for American contributions to newspaper journalism, literature, and music.

Extended hours for finals
Starting on Sunday, November 29, after the Thanksgiving holiday break, the Madden Library will be open every day until the end of final exams, through Friday, December 18. On Saturdays, the Library will be open from 1—5 p.m.
Library open Saturdays
Beginning Saturday, Nov. 21, the Henry Madden Library will reopen Saturday afternoons. The Library will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 21, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12, thanks to one-time federal stimulus money.

The Library's hours for fall semester 2009 begin on August 24th. The regular hours of opening are:

Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arne Nixon Center
Did you know that the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature (3rd floor south) is one of about ten such collections in the country and the only one west of the Mississippi? It began with a donation of 22,000 books from the late Professor Arne Nixon. When he died, he left the Library a generous bequest to establish the Center.
Library's Oldest Book
Vita Christi is the oldest book in the Library. It was printed in 1474 in a Carthusian monastery. Titled Vita Christi [Life of Christ], it is called an incunabulum as all books printed with movable type prior to 1501 are considered incunabula. This book is housed in the Special Collections Research Center.

The Writing Center is offering help on a drop-in basis at the Library (1st floor, North Wing) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m.; and on Fridays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
