June English Forestry Collection
From 1978 until her death in 1987, Mrs June English worked
as an historian and researcher for the Pineridge District of the
Sierra National Forest. Her employment was funded under the
Older Americans Program. Mrs English was an established
researcher for many years before she assisted the Forest Service,
and had been active in the Fresno County Historical Society and
the Fresno Genealogical Society. One of the projects she was
most proud of was her meticulous index of clippings, grazing
permits, mining and homesteading claims, oral histories, and
other historical sources relating to the human history of the
Sierra Nevada foothills and the Sierra National Forest.
The English/Forestry Collection consists of forty-two 12"-
long file boxes of 3"x5" index cards and eleven 11"x15"x12"
cardboard storage boxes of original and photocopied indexed
sources mentioned above, as well as a few original photographs
and some maps. The index cards have been moved to library card
catalogue drawers just as they were arranged in the file boxes,
and the research materials have been transferred intact into
acid-free storage boxes. This accumulation of material had been
sorted by Mrs English into the subjects listed on the following
pages. The subject descriptions, except for some minor
clarifications, are those assigned by her.
Mrs English's procedure was to use original or photocopied
materials and underline in red those items she wished to index.
She would sometimes annotate the items with some modifying
comments based on her extensive knowledge of the subject. She
would then make an index card with the subject she assigned and
the location in one of the eleven boxes, which were lettered A-D,
E.1, E.2, F-J. She would then indicate the specific subject file
within the box and the exact item within the file. The items
within the files consist of one or more sheets so that a specific
item in a file may consist of many individual interrelated
sheets. When consulting the following list, please keep in mind
that the item notation after the subject may contain many
individual pages even though only "1 item" is indicated.
