Due to the generous support of the University and many loyal donors, the Bulldog
Marching Band is able to offer financial stipends in return for band participation. In 2007, 163 students received stipends, for a total of $104,300.00. Marching band stipends can range from $100 to $600, depending on ability and need of the band. Members of the Bulldog Beat, our smaller touring band, receive stipends beginning at $2,100. Bulldog Beat members are required to perform at home volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball games, as well other performances, both on and off campus. Furthermore, each January, the Bulldog Beats tour California, performing for high school students. Bulldog Beat instrumentation is limited to saxophones, trumpets, mellophones, trombones, and rhythm section. Beat members are required to improvise. All Bulldog Beat members are required to be a part of the Bulldog Marching Band in the fall.
Financial stipends are awarded on the basis of ability. Wind and percussion auditions for
the 2009 Bulldog Marching Band and Bulldog Beat will take place in early spring, 2009.

posted on this web-site after January 1, 2009. The audition consists of a scales (up to
three sharps and three flats, plus chromatic), prepared etude, and sight-reading. Bulldog
Beat audition will also include improvisation. Color guard members are also eligible for
stipends. Color guard auditions are held in late spring; guard audition for 2009 will be

Nearly every person who auditions for a marching band stipend receives some amount. The marching band activity can be time intensive; the stipends are a way of paying students back for their time.
