Changing Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Mathematics
The mathematical preparation of future elementary teachers is being governed by the recently adopted Elementary Subject Matter Program Standards. Following in their footsteps are the anticipated changes to the Standards for the Subject Matter Requirements for Mathematics Programs. This session will summarize the major changes in elementary teacher preparation requirements, provide an update on the single subject mathematics standards development, and introduce some ways in which mathematics and mathematics education faculty can participate in the further refinement of the latter emerging standards.

Innovations in K-8 Mathematics Teacher Preparation
In two major projects at San Diego State University, we have tried to improve the mathematical preparation of prospective elementary school teachers (PSTs). The first was a curriculum development project funded to restructure the four mathematics content courses for PSTs. We will describe these courses. The second project was funded as a research and development project to integrate mathematics and pedagogy for PSTs. We will describe this project designed to change prospective elementary school teachers' beliefs about mathematics and to maximize their mathematics learning by providing them with opportunities to think about children's mathematical thinking. We will introduce a Mathematical Early Field Experience course developed and currently used at SDSU as part of the Blended program of content and pedagogy for liberal studies majors. We will briefly describe instruments we developed for measuring beliefs and content, and we will share some data from our research study. We will also show videoclips of children engaged in mathematical thinking and discuss how we use these videoclips with our PSTs.
