Mediators and Mentors pose for a photo

Mediator Mentors is a university-public school partnership in which future teachers, counselors, social workers and school psychologists support the development of conflict resolution skills in school children.  At California State University, Fresno, Dr. Pam Lane-Garon in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development directs the program with the assistance of Dr. Art Wint, coordinator of Peace and Conflict Studies.  Teachers and students in the public schools receive eight to 10 hours of communication and conflict resolution training and university students coach and mentor at lunch periods. Mediator Appreciation Day in May addressed conflict resolution
The importance of conflict resolution skills in sports and business was the focus of the sixth-annual Mediator Appreciation Day in May at California State University, Fresno. More than 1,000 student conflict managers from five Central Valley school districts will convened at the Satellite Student Union , where they were honored for mediating conflicts among peers through Fresno State’s Mediator Mentors program. Mediator Mentors program earns university national service award
The Corporation for National and Community Service honored California State University, Fresno, Feb. 11 at the American Council on Education (ACE) annual conference with a Special Achievement Award as part of the second annual President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Fresno State was one of two minority-serving institutions that received the special achievement award in recognition of its commitment to service.

"We are honored to be selected for this Special Achievement Award," said Fresno State President John D. Welty. "Fresno State has a long-standing commitment to community service. Our faculty, staff and students have answered the call to use their knowledge and skills to serve the needs of our community and this award is a tribute to their hard work."

The Special Achievement Award was given in recognition of the Fresno State Mediator Mentors program, a university-public school partnership in which future teachers, counselors, social workers, and school psychologists support the development of conflict resolution skills in school children. In 2006-07, approximately 70 Fresno State students trained and mentored 300 youth peer mediators at 40 different elementary and middle schools students in the Fresno area. More...

 

Mediator Mentors program featured in Fresno State Magazine
Until last year, whenever Thomas Elementary School Principal Bob Nelson returned to his office from lunch, he would find a handful of students waiting for him to settle their arguments. Nelson’s afternoons have been transformed, he says, by a peer mediation program begun with help from Fresno State’s Kremen School of Education and Human Development.
