Training Materials

Mediation Process Outline
As you know, mediation is a problem-solving process. We are neutral facilitators. We will help you stay on course so you may solve your own problem together. Do you both want to participate? more

Active Listening Techniques
Statements that help the other person talk include: Encouraging, Clarifying, Restating, Reflecting, Summarizing and Validating. more

Here's what you'll experience when you get to the school site:

  1. Children are invested in each other's welfare;
  2. Teachers are freed to handle more serious discipline problems;
  3. Students are given a structure in which to practice "considering the thoughts and feelings of others";
  4. One goal of the peer mediation program is to encourage the development of empathy;
  5. A "by product" of the process is self control (one must be patient to work through the steps of problem solving) ; and
  6. Students are given naturalistic opportunities to practice being persons of positive character. more
