- WHAT IS THE MENTORING INSTITUTE?
The program is a unique experience that offers faculty and staff
members and trained students the opportunity to interact one-on-one
with freshmen in a setting other than the traditional classroom
or office environment.
- WHAT IS A MENTOR/WHY BE A MENTOR?
A mentor is someone who provides guidance, friendship, and support
and serves as a role model to students. Your personal attention,
help, advice, information and encouragement will help students
to succeed academically.
- WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE A MENTOR?
You are required to be a faculty or staff member or eligible student,
attend training workshops and submit an application to the Mentoring
Institute.
- WHERE DO I GET AN APPLICATION?
Applications are available at
this link or by calling the office at 559-278-4468.
- HOW WILL I KNOW WHO MY MENTEE IS?
You will receive a packet with your mentee’s name and contact
information within a few weeks of being selected as a mentor.
- HOW MANY MENTEES ARE ASSIGNED TO EACH MENTOR?
Subject to availability, as a mentor you will have the opportunity
to decide how many mentees you are interested in mentoring throughout
the semester.
- HOW DO I CONTACT MY MENTEE?
The packet you receive contains your mentee’s address, telephone
number and email address. You can contact your mentee for an appointment
in person, by phone or email for a time that is convenient to both
of you.
- WHAT DO I TALK TO MY MENTEE ABOUT?
You can talk to your mentee about your educational experience (the
good and the bad), your research, the importance of networking,
and about your mentee’s academic and personal concerns.
- HOW OFTEN DO I MEET WITH MY MENTEE?
You will meet a minimum of 4 times during the first semester. After
that, you can continue to meet as often as you like.
- WHO ARE THE MENTEES AT FRESNO STATE?
The student mentees at Fresno State are first-year students not participating
in other university advising/mentoring programs.
