Study Abroad in Cairo
A Summer Study Abroad Program at the American University in Cairo will be coordinated by Dr. Sameh ElKharbawy, Associate Professor in Art and Design.
With the tensions in the Middle East today, the value of cultural understanding between the Islamic and Western worlds has never been greater. Studying in Egypt opens this captivating world to scrutiny and exploration. With its unmistakably unified identity, its developed institutions, rich traditions and civic dynamics, Egypt represents the modern Middle East. Egypt's burgeoning economy and vital political position continue to give it a profound influence on the world.
The seven-week Summer-in-Egypt program will be co-hosted by the American University in Cairo (AUC) - a fully accredited university in the United States. In Cairo, students will have the opportunity to learn Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, while uncovering the majesty of the city's art and architecture and its energetic street life, music and people. The AUC Summer Session typically runs from mid June to end of July, with accelerated sessions in both June and July. It offers a selection of courses in more than 30 fields, including Arabic Language (at the AUC Arabic Language Institute- directed by Professor El Said Badawi), Arabic-Islamic culture, thought, language, and history as well as Middle Eastern Culture, Media and Politics.
The primary liaison for the program will be Tomader Rifaat, director of International Programs. Professors Bahgat Korany and Joel Beinin will advise on courses in Middle Eastern Studies and Political Science; Dr. Eleonora Fernandes on Arabic Studies. The American University in Cairo operates a student residence located in the residential district of Zamalek. The Residence is a short drive from the university, and is served by a campus shuttle every 20 minutes. Additionally, the Summer in Egypt will include many captivating weekend destinations.
