Symphonic Band
Come join the Fresno State Opera Workshop and the Symphonic Band for a special joint performance entitled, “Turn back the clock: Fresno, 1908.” This unique performance is a recreation of a band concert and theatrical revue, as it might have occurred one hundred years ago, in Fresno’s Barton Opera House. The Symphonic Band will be performing a concert in the style of the John Philip Sousa band, with uniforms, guest soloists, ragtime pieces, and plenty of marches. After intermission, the Opera Workshop will be presenting scenes from period operettas, filled with songs of the early 1900s. Performances will include a barbershop quartet and a grand patriotic finale. All music performed is from 1908 or before, and was popular in America at the time. Special guests for the concert will the Reedley High School “Muskrat Ramblers” Traditional Jazz Band, which will be performing “old-time” jazz before the concert and during the intermission. More than just a concert, the Opera Workshop and Symphonic Band hope to re-create 1908.
