Dr. Krista Riggs

Dr. Krista RiggsKrista Riggs earned the degree of Doctor of Music in Oboe Performance and Literature from Indiana University, Bloomington, with minors in Music Education and Library Science. Upon the final document defense for the degree, she was unanimously awarded high distinction by the music faculty committee. Also from Indiana University, she holds a Master of Music in Oboe Performance (with a cognate in Music Theory) and Master of Library Science. Having done undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and Arizona State University, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from ASU with a Bachelor of Music in Orchestral Performance, where she also studied music composition. Her principal teachers include Theodore Baskin, Roger Roe, Harry Sargous, Henry Schuman, and Martin Schuring.

Riggs has been invited to present solo performances, lecture recitals, and research papers at regional, national, and international conferences. Some recent invitations include the annual conference of the International Double Reed Society (Muncie, IN), national and regional conferences of the College Music Society (Quebec City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco), the International Symposium on the Philosophy of Music Education (Hamburg, Germany), the world conference of the International Society for Music Education (Malaysia), and the Symposium on Assessment in Music Education (Gainesville, FL), with articles published in the Double Reed and the Philosophy of Music Education Review. With special fondness for the music and life of Clara Schumann, Riggs has also researched the twentieth century American oboe concerto, the Telemann Fantasies for Flute without Bass, effects of the recording industry on oboe performance, and the use of extended techniques for oboe and English horn after Berio's influence. Her diverse research interests span beyond the oboe and its repertoire to include a new model for a curriculum based on the notion of flow and optimal experience, applying theoretical analysis for performance with understanding, a new model for assessment of studio instruction, and fostering creative performance in studio instruction. An advocate of new music, she is collaborating with composer Jason Bahr on a new piece for solo English horn that utilizes multiphonics and extended techniques.
