RECRUITMENT:
Predicated upon adequate funding, Graduate Teaching Associate (TA) and Graduate Assistant (GA) positions are available in the Department of Music at California State University, Fresno for students in Band, Orchestra, Choir, Conducting, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Strings, Piano, Voice, Opera, Music Composition, and Music Education.

Duties – Position Descriptions:
For Mus 1A (Sightsinging and Ear Training). A 1-unit core class for music majors. Basic drill in the singing and recognition of intervals, scales, chords, and diatonic melodies, in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs. Dictation of rhythms, intervals, chords, diatonic melodies and harmonic dictation. Two contact hours of classroom instruction plus preparation per week (1.3 WTU).
For Music 9: Introduction to Music (piano sections). A general education 3-unit course for non-music majors. The course includes teaching music theory and aesthetics for the general student. Notation of pitch and rhythm will also be taught as well as reading, playing, and writing melodies with chordal accompaniment. Three contact hours of classroom instruction plus preparation per week (3 WTU).
For MUS 74: (Listener’s Guide to Music). Exploration of a wide range of musical styles (past, present, classical, and popular) through guided practical experiences and the development of an aesthetic sensitivity for music of various cultures. Three contact hours of classroom instruction plus preparation per week (3 WTU).
Minimum Qualifications: Must be student currently in or fully admitted to the Music MA program at California State University, Fresno. Must enroll in at least 6 units (three of which must be graduate units) for the semester or in two courses applicable to program of study. The successful candidate must have a minimum grade point of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred (this would be for the last 60 units of an undergraduate program if the candidate is an entering MA student, or for returning MA students, their current MA GPA). For Music 9 and Music 1A the successful candidate must have piano skills that at a minimum include playing a melody with one hand and accompanying chords with the other, plus an ability to demonstrate scales and other theoretical concepts on the piano. TA applicants may be asked to demonstrate piano skills. GA piano accompanying candidates may also be asked to demonstrate piano skills. Candidates whose GRE scores (Verbal and Quantitative) total 1000 or higher will be preferred. International students being considered for TA positions will be preferred with a TOEFL score of 600 or better; for GA positions TOEFL scores may be lower than 600. TA candidates must have basic knowledge of at least one rudimentary music writing software program. TA candidates must have the ability to write and grade exams and assignments.
