The next addition to the Peace Garden will be a memorial to
honor a woman of peace.
A committee is now planning the sculpture, and hopes to have
it installed in 2004. Following nominations from the campus and
community, the honoree will be selected, fund-raising undertaken,
and an artist selected to create the sculpture.
Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, Chair of the Peace Garden Committee, said
including a memorial of a woman has always been a part of the
plan. “My own personal conviction is that without a woman
the peace garden would not be complete. The person we choose
must have led a life strong in human rights, social justice,
peace, and nonviolence. It will be a challenge to select just
one woman because there are so many to choose from.”
Guidelines and Nomination Submission Form
Guidelines
The woman selected for the next Peace Garden monument should
be an inspiring individual. She should have excelled, during
her life, at work related to the mission of the Peace Garden,
including one of more of the following:
- Promoted understanding, tolerance, and mutual respect among
people.
- Was an activist for positive social changes based on the
philosophy of nonviolence.
- Worked to oppose prejudice, discrimination, and oppression.
- Made a significant impact in paving the way for a just and
humane social order.
The nominated woman should have completed her life. She does
not have to be famous, since her presence in the Peace Garden
would also serve to educate people about the kind of work she
did in her life. Name recognition, though, would be a plus.
Names of nominated women will be presented to the students who
will be researching their accomplishments, so you do not have
to provide too much here. However we would like to know the general
area of her life’s work and why you think we should consider
her for the Peace Garden.
