1. Admissions and Student Preparation

Data presented are for fall applicants for the years 1998-2002.  Groupings are for freshmen, undergraduate transfers, returning undergraduates, post baccalaureate candidates, doctoral candidates, and transitory students.

Returning undergraduates are former students who left the university at some point in the past and reapplied for the indicated semester; some having enrolled in a community college or elsewhere in the interim.

Post baccalaureate candidates include candidates for both masters degrees and teaching credentials.

Data on doctoral candidates is limited: we do not have ethnic or gender breakdown on unsuccessful applicants and several of those appear as post baccalaureate applicants as well.  In any case, the numbers are sufficiently small that an analysis of their distribution by gender or ethnicity would not be meaningful.

Transitory students include students who take courses through one of the university programs, Step to College, Unitrack, or 65+, who do not matriculate.  Unitrack, a program in which high school students earn college credit for campus approved, typically advanced placement, classes taught in the high school, is the largest component in this area.  Step to College students are also high school students but these students are attending regular classes on our campus.  The 60+ program provides inexpensive course enrollment to seniors who are not seeking a degree or credential.

1.2 Preparation/Selectivity of Entering Students

The SAT and ACT exams are required only for students with high school grade point averages below 3.00. Many students, however, take one or the other of the exams even when their GPA exceeds that value.  Approximately 70% of entering freshmen do so.

Each entering freshman is required to take the English Placement Test and the Entry Level Math Test unless they exempt one or both tests on the basis of scores on certain national exams or the successful completion of the basic General Education in English or mathematics course prior to matriculation.  Approximately 30% of students exempt each of the exams but while 60% of those taking the English Placement Test pass, only 7% of those taking the Entry Level Math Test do so.

Admission to the graduate program requires appropriate scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), the Graduate management Admission Test (GMAT), or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) depending upon the major involved.

Admission by Race/Ethnicity

The categories used are AM IND – American Indians and Alaskan Natives; ASIAN/PI – Asians and Pacific Islanders; AF AM – African Americans; HISPANIC – all Hispanic ethnicities; WHITE – non-Hispanic whites; and UNKNOWN – those marking Other or Decline on their application and those with no response.  The UNKNOWN category, which constituted 12-15% of applicants and admits in earlier years grew dramatically in 2002, particularly among returning undergraduates and post baccalaureate candidates for whom it often constituted 50% of the responses. The increase is entirely in the no response category, rising from an approximately constant 6 percent of all applicants for 1998 through 2001 to 16 percent for 2002.  A correlate and possible explanation for this phenomenon is the greatly increased use of the Web version of the application.  Obviously, a very high non response rate calls into question the representativeness of the ethnic distributions based upon the responders.  Our data are consistent with studies by others which suggest that white students are more likely to decline or not respond to such application items.

The Share percentages require further comment: for the five ethnic categories, the percentage shown is the percentage of those for whom ethnicity is known; for the UNKNOWN category, the percentage shown is the percentage of all students in the category.
