Students for Community Service

Overview

California State University, Fresno students can enroll in two different courses that will furnish them with an in-depth community service-learning experience and provide academic credit in exchange for volunteer service.  Students can choose where they wish to do their service activities from hundreds of nonprofit agencies and can tailor the experience to fit their schedule and interests.  The two courses available to students are Community Service 1 - Community Service-Learning and Community Service 101 - Community Service Internships.  These courses are open to all students regardless of major or year in school.

Why enroll in a Community Service Course?

Taking part in a Community Service Course will provide students with a unique, experiential based learning activity.  Direct experience is one of the best ways to learn and develop personally, professionally and academically.  Research has shown that students who engage in community service during their undergraduate years improve their academic performance, gain considerable professional/career advantages, and realize many personal benefits.  Of course, the community also benefits from the thousands of hours of service provided by students in these courses.

Which Community Service Course is right for you?

Students can enroll in either Community Service 1 or Community Service 101.  Students who have taken one of the Community Service courses can always enroll in the other course if they wish to expand their community service-learning experience.  It does not matter which course you take first; you choose the course that best fits your needs.  To help you decide which class is right for you, here is a side-by-side comparison of some of the most important characteristics of the two courses.
