PhilosophyWe believe that, as part of a complete educational experience, community service and service-learning can foster a student's personal and career development, strengthen their sense of community, and build leadership skills. Students today face a world with many pressing social and economic problems. Students For Community Service is committed to developing a ethnically and socially diverse group of community service volunteers who can adequately address the variety and complexity of today's social problems. Through a richly diverse group of students, SCS is dedicated to nurturing an environment of cultural and ethnic sensitivity among students and the community. The benefits of a strong, ongoing community service program reach everyone both inside the University and in the general community: Students benefit by developing personal, career and leadership skills; the University benefits by graduating students who are more well rounded and "real world" experienced; service organizations benefit by having access to a large pool of trained, dedicated volunteers; and the community in general gains by having services available through volunteers that otherwise may not have been offered due to budgetary constraints. By promoting the values and opportunities offered through community service and encouraging people to be involved, we hope to foster all of the benefits derived through volunteerism. |
