A Message from the Senate Chair
The faculty on the campus of California State University, Fresno have always
taken the charge of the California State legislature to recognize the “joint
decision-making and consultation between administration and faculty or academic
employees is the long-accepted manner of governing institutions of higher
learning and is essential to the performance of the educational
missions of such institutions” [the California Higher Education
Employer-Employees Relations Act (HEERA), section 3561(b)] quite seriously. The
Faculty have the primary responsibility for such fundamental
areas as curriculum, subject matter and methods of instruction, research
and creative/scholarly activity, faculty status, and those aspects of student
life which relate to the educational process including matters directly affecting
the instructional budget (Constitution of the Academic Assembly, Section
6).
These are great responsibilities for the faculty at Fresno State. Traditionally we have had one of the strongest and most vocal academic assemblies in the California State University system. The Academic Senate is the voice of the faculty on our campus. If you are a member of the faculty I urge you to participate in the activities of the Academic Senate. A strong faculty voice is possible ONLY if we all participate in guiding the future of our campus. If you are student, staff member, or alum faculty governance is always happy to assist you in any way we can.
Please feel to contact me if you need help resolving a campus issue, need to voice a concern about our campus, or just want to know how things work on campus.
Cheers,
Mike Botwin, Chair
Academic Senate
