Educators throughout California face the challenge of providing quality and comprehensible mathematics education to an ever-increasing number of language minority students. The challenge is increased as new and under-prepared teachers enter the profession. Even for those who hold CLAD or BCLAD certification, the methodology is usually focused on language and reading, and the methods rarely applied in science or mathematics. The goal of this workshop is to make links between school mathematics, and the California Mathematics Standards and ELD Standards.
Participants will:
- increase adult mathematics understanding in the algebra strand,
- increase second language acquisition methodology,
- effectively combine classroom mathematics and grade level ELD standards,
- develop inquiry lessons with simultaneous and specific goals in each standard,
- build communities of learners and teachers in mathematics,
- earn 3 optional professional development units from CSU Fresno,
- this 5-day program qualifies for 40 hours of SB 472/AB 466 follow-up!
Other dates and locations are available for groups in Mariposa, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings or
Tulare counties (minimum of 15 participants).
Times: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $ 400.00 per person
(2 professional development units will be available at the additional cost of $50 per unit.)
