The 8th Annual Leadership Retreat is an exciting opportunity to network with fellow providers of mathematics professional development, explore the latest research when working with adults and teachers, and keep current on the latest updates from the state.

Evaluating Professional Development
: An ASCD Action Tool. Sue has served as teacher, administrator, and consultant and is currently a part-time curriculum director for the Roland-Story Community School District in Story City, Iowa. In addition, she holds a part-time position as joint services coordinator for the 15 Iowa-area education agencies, serves as the director of the Mid-Iowa School Improvement Consortium, and conducts staff development programs for school districts throughout the Midwest. Beers has worked with more than 150 school districts and education agencies in the areas of school improvement planning, effective instructional strategies, assessment planning and development, and reading strategies across the content areas.

Creating a Professional Development Program That Works
Whether you're already an expert staff developer or you're taking on this role for the first time, this Institute will help you increase the effectiveness of your professional development, from stand-alone Institutes to comprehensive systemwide programs. Sue Beers will discuss how to work through the process of designing, implementing, and evaluating professional development using a variety of tools to guide discussion and planning. During this retreat, learn how to

  • Create a vision and definition of professional development for your learning community.
  • Establish a common understanding of your professional development program's content and results.
  • Solve time, logistics, and sequencing issues.
  • Design and implement professional development tasks and activities that align to school and district goals.
  • Measure your progress and reflect on individual and group improvement.
  • Evaluate the impact of professional development and sharing your success.
