Matthew Ari Jendian received both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Southern California in August 1995 and 2001, respectively (Dissertation title:  "Assimilation and Ethnicity: Adaptation Patterns and Ethnic Identity among Armenian-Americans in Central California").  He received his baccalaureate degree in sociology from California State University, Fresno in 1991 along with minor degrees in psychology and Armenian Studies. He has been part of the sociology faculty at Fresno State since spring 1995. In August 1998, he was appointed as a full-time lecturer in Sociology and assigned to develop and coordinate the American Humanics Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management and Leadership at Fresno State.

Areas of Specialty

He teaches courses in race/ethnicity, terrorism and genocide, social issues, and advocacy and community organizing. In August 2002, Dr. Jendian became a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sociology, and he continues to direct the American Humanics Program and serve as faculty advisor for the American Humanics Student Association.  In May 2006, Dr. Jendian received two university-wide faculty awards: 1) "Spirit of Service Award, recognizinghis exemplary commitment to community engagement,"awarded by the campus' Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning and presented by University President John Welty, and 2) "Outstanding Advisor Award," acknowledging the role on campus as a "key to student success," awarded by the Campus Advisors' Network and presented by the Provost and the Dean of Students.

He and his wife, Pamela, reside in Clovis with their two sons, Joshua and Nicholas.
