Use of Academic Accomodations

Use of services provided by SSD is strictly voluntary on the part of the student. The campus is not required to provide the accommodations unless the student makes known the need for such an accommodation, the disability is verified by an appropriate professional and the accommodation is appropriate for the needs of the disability.

The Disability Management Specialists at SSD are professionally trained and prepared to assist the campus in making such decisions. The Disability Management Specialist monitors each step from the initial contact with the student to the verification of the disability and its effect on the student. A student’s accommodations must be authorized in order for Services for Students with Disabilities to request a specific accommodation or advocate for a student with a disability.

The staff is always available to the student and to the professor to answer questions and concerns related to disability. We are able to assess and reassess, with the student’s and faculty’s input, how we can best meet the student's needs without fundamentally altering essential components of their education.

Professors will be contacted via letter if their assistance is needed to provide the accommodation. The nature of the disability can be discussed with the professor as it relates to the tasks needing accommodation, however, the specific diagnosis can not be revealed due to legal considerations related to disclosure of confidential information.

On the following pages, you will find types of academic accommodations that can be made, if the verification of disability warrants the accommodation. While these accommodations are those most commonly used, the possibilities are not limited to this list.
