Why and/or how did the SSG Program come about?

The Scholars Service Grant came about to support a student population that was being under served and needed more attention. The students were high academic achievers with a demonstrated financial need ($1,920.00 unmet need).

In the spring 1998 semester students voted for a fee increase, effective in the Fall 1998 semester. Whenever there is a student fee increase, the CSU Trustees mandate that one third of the money generated from that increase go to the Financial Aid office to offset the fee increase for financial aid students.

During the 1998 summer months, representatives from student affairs, financial aid and enrollment management offices, addressed this underserved population question with the SSG idea. Consequently, money was earmarked from the student fee increase for the SSG program.

What is a service site?

A service site is a program, project or service located in a department, office, other university affiliated location or community where a student completes their service hours. Most service sites are located on campus although we do have a number of sites in the community.

What type of opportunities do you feel the SSG Program provides for its students, financial and otherwise?

Outside of the obvious financial assistance students receive with their educational expenses, the SSG program offers the student the opportunity to partner with a faculty, staff, or community member in a meaningful experience. The freshman and/or undecided student has the opportunity to explore an academic area, ask questions, and gather other information that helps them decide on their field of study, or, helps them decide on what they do not want to study. Experienced students, at, or near their last semesters as seniors or graduate students, have the opportunity to polish up research skills, acquire needed experience for further graduate study and the "real world" job market, and qualify experience for letters of recommendation or job referrals. The benefit extends to faculty, departments and staff and their programs or projects as well. They are the benefactors of top notch student assistance that often enhances their academic goal or the end result of their research.
