Where is the Student Health and Counseling Center?
We are located on the south side of the campus in the single-story red brick building between the dorms and the lab school.
What services do you offer?
We are an accredited ambulatory health care center.
- Care for minor to moderate illness and injury (outpatient)
- Health and wellness education
- Counseling Services
- Diagnostic: Lab and x-ray
Our staff includes, but is not limited to: Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, a Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Medical Assistants, Psychiatrist, Psychologists, Counselors, a Health Educator, Dietitian, Laboratory Technologists, X-ray Technologist, Physical Therapists, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technologists, a Medical Records Staff.
What are the hours?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays 8:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m.
to 4:45 p.m.
Limited services between 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
Summer hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
We are closed when the campus is closed.
Do I need an appointment?
No, for most services you can walk in however appointments are encouraged.
How long is the wait time?
The average wait time is less than 1 hour. This may increase during very busy times.
What does it cost?
Most services are free. We charge for prescriptions, over the counter medications, some immunization, some lab tests and a few elective procedures.
What if there is a charge and I cannot pay?
We will provide care as appropriate when needed. Unpaid charges will result in a financial hold on students records.
How is the Student Health and Counseling Center funded?
The Student Health and Counseling Center is supported by the mandatory health fee that is paid by each student as part of their Fresno State tuition.
Can my family members use the Student Health and Counseling Center?
No, only enrolled students may use the Student Health and Counseling Center.
Can I use the Student Health and Counseling Center during the summer?
If you are a continuing student, you can use our services. Incoming students can begin using our services the day the semester begins.
I will be starting school in the fall semester. Can I use the Student Health and Counseling Center now?
You may begin using our services on the first day of the Fall semester. You may, however, visit the Student Health and Counseling Center to drop off medical or immunization records at any time.
Can I use the Student Health and Counseling Center even if I have my own insurance?
Will you bill my insurance if there is a charge?
We do not bill insurance. We do provide receipts for insurance reimbursement.
Does the University require students to carry their own health insurance?
No, however we strongly encourage students to have supplementary insurance. Visit our Student Health Insurance page to learn more.
I would like to have additional health insurance. Where can I find out information on this supplementary insurance?
Is the Student Health and Counseling Center only for students who get sick or hurt on campus?
No. If you are able to safely get to the Student Health and Counseling Center during our business hours, we can treat you. Never delay medical care for serious problems.
What do I do if I get sick or hurt when the Student Health and Counseling Center is closed?
If you cannot wait until the Student Health and Counseling Center opens, obtain care at a hospital or other medical clinic. After hours care locations are posted on the door of the Student Health and Counseling Center or on our website. If you have insurance, contact the company to make sure that care is covered.
Who pays for care outside the Student Health and Counseling Center?
You bear the costs of services provided by referrals for evaluation by a specialist, hospitalization, or laboratory or radiologic testing beyond our scope of practice.
We discuss these costs with you before initiating evaluation or treatment. While we make recommendations with concern for your health, we will work with you to keep costs to a minimum.
You have the right to choose the specialist or health facility for referral.
You are not required to accept referrals. If you do not want a referral, we will attempt to address your needs.
You must accept full responsibility for any outcome that results from going against medical advice.
What if I need to be transferred from the campus to an outside hospital or medical facility?
In an emergency, you will be transported by ambulance as appropriate. The Student Health and Counseling Center has a contract with a local transportation (cab) company and can provide rides to outside facilities.
What about vision, dental, or chiropractic services?
We do not offer these services however we can make referrals. Students will be responsible for all outside costs.
I am not 18 years old. Can I use the Student Health and Counseling Center?
Yes. Your parent or guardian must sign consent for treatment prior to your receiving services.
Will my medical record be kept confidential at the Student Health and Counseling Center?
Yes. No unauthorized person may access your records without your permission.
I am a new student with a chronic health condition, what should I do?
We recommend that you come in to the health center and fill out a medical history form. This information will be valuable in an emergency.
Where is the pharmacy? What are the hours?

What is the cost for the pharmacy?
Medications, both prescriptions and over-the-counter, are sold at cost. For prices, call the pharmacy at 278-6720.
Do you sell over the counter medications?
Yes and the products are available at considerably lower prices than found in an outside pharmacy or drug store.
Can you fill a prescription from my doctor at home?
Yes, we fill prescriptions from any licensed provider (or doctor from home) but we have a limited number of medications.
Even though we offer discounted prices, sometimes it is cheaper to have your prescription filled at an outside pharmacy.
Can I transfer prescriptions?
Yes, the pharmacy will accept any valid prescription. We can transfer "in" or "out" prescriptions.
What if I need a new prescription?
Our providers can assist with appropriate prescriptions.
