Early Start is about student success!

In 2012 the Early Start Program was launched as an admission requirement at every California State University campus. Incoming freshman must meet Early Start requirements before beginning their first semester of college.

Early Start participation is based on your  English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam scores.

The Early Start Smart Page will tell you whether or not you need to take Early Start courses. Submit your test scores and transcripts to Fresno State as soon as possible so that your Early Start status can be determined.

You may be exempt from the Early Start requirements based on scores from select high school courses, AP, SAT, or ACT tests. Visit the Exemptions page for more information.

Students may complete Early Start courses at any CSU campus before they attend their first semester of college. Example, if you are admitted to Fresno State in the fall, but live in San Diego, you can complete Early Start at San Diego State. You may also complete Early Start online or by taking an approved course at a community college.

Fresno State offers Early Start over a six-week period in the summer months of June and July. Depending on the courses you select, Early Start can be completed in as little as two weeks, though students are strongly advised to pace themselves and get the most out of the program.

Early Start tuition-fees are kept as low as possible with financial aid available for qualified students. Visit the Cost page for more information on tuition-fees.

Take a look at the Timeline we have put together of important dates that you need to know so that you will be ready to enter into your first semester at Fresno State.

Early Start courses run during the same time as Dog Days orientations.  Check the Course Schedule to see when courses are offered to avoid a scheduling conflict.  Or, speak to the Early Start instructor if you need to resolve a scheduling conflict between your course and a Dog Days appointment.

The Resources page has all the information you will need to get enrolled in your Early Start course, including preparatory materials, forms, and a campus map.
