The Early Start Program: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Early Start Program?
The Early Start Program was mandated by the CSU Board of Trustees in response to numbers of new students who have been assessed as not ready for college level mathematics and English. The goals of the Early Start Program include better preparation of students to begin college by beginning their mathematics and English in the summer.
Will I be required to participate in the Early Start Program?
For fall 2013, new first time freshman who require the most academic support in mathematics or English based on their ELM or EPT score will be required to begin academic support courses during summer 2013 through the Early Start Program. To see if you are required to participate, you must access your Early Start Smart Page found at your Student Center at https://my.csufresno.edu.
Can I be exempted from the Early Start Program?
You may be exempt if:
- You are a non-resident of California.
- You participate in the Summer Bridge program at Fresno State.
- You received the appropriate exemption scores in your EAP, AP, SAT, or ACT.
- You complete an approved course at a California Community College.
How do I indicate the way I will complete the Early Start Program?
Before enrolling in the fall 2013 term, you must notify Fresno State of your plans to fulfill the Early Start requirement. To submit this information, you must indicate your plan to complete the Early Start Program on the Early Start Smart Page found at your Student Center at https://my.csufresno.edu
What ways can I complete the Early Start Program?
You may complete the CSU Early Start Program by:
- Completing an on-campus course at Fresno State.
- Completing an on-campus course at another CSU campus.
What if I do not complete the Early Start Program?
If you are required to complete the Early Start Program, you will not be permitted to enroll in the fall 2013 term until you identify how you will fulfill this requirement
When is the Early Start Program?
The Early Start Program at Fresno State will be offered beginning early July. Dates may vary at other CSUs.
Can I take Early Start in the fall?
No, the Early Start Program must be taken during the summer.
How do I register for the Early Start Program?
Students who are eligible to submit FAFSA should do so before enrolling in Early Start. If you have submitted a FAFSA and meet a specific estimated family contribution (EFC), you may be eligible for a waiver of registration fees for the Early Start Program. The waiver does not cover books or materials for courses. Students who are not eligible to submit FAFSA, including AB 540 students, should be sure to file the State Financial Aid application prior to enrolling in Early Start. A formula similar to the EFC is used to determine eligibility for the waiver.
Is financial aid available for the Early Start Program?
If you have submitted a FAFSA and meet a specific estimated family contribution (EFT), you will be eligible for a waiver of registration fees for the Early Start Program. The waiver does not cover books or materials for courses.
Who can register for Early Start classes?
Only students who earned a score less than 50 in the ELM and/or less than 138 in the EPT are allowed to enroll in Early Start courses. For the Fall Semester of 2013 each CSU Admissions office will notify their incoming students if they must take the Early Start classes in Summer 2013. When will the schedule be out?

How soon can I register?
You may register after you indicate your smart page choice and receive registration instructions. You should register as soon as possible after being notified.
What classes will be offered?
ESM 1: Early Start Math 1 (1 unit); ESM 3: Early Start Math 3 (3 units); ESE 1: Early Start English 1 (1 unit).
Where will the classes be held?
Classes will be held on the Fresno State campus in Fresno or online.
Is Early Start Online?
Fresno State will have a limited number of online seats available. Highly independent learners have the best success with this type of online instruction.
Will an Early Start class count toward my degree?
Early Start classes will not count toward your CSU degree.
How much are the fees and when are they due?
Fees are $182 per unit and are due by June 3rd. Students will also pay a $1.00 Health Center fee and a $1.00 University Student Union fee when paying their tuition fees.
Will I need a Fresno State student ID number and card?
Most Early Start students will receive Fresno State ID cards during their Dog Days Orientation.
What student services will be in operation during Early Start?
Kennel Bookstore on the Fresno State Campus will be open from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
The Henry Madden Library will be open Monday through Thursday, from 7:45 am to 8:00 pm; Fridays, 7:45 am to 5:00 pm; Sundays, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The library will be closed on Saturdays and on July 4.
Do I need a parking permit?
Early Start Parking Permits can be purchased for $20 at the Fresno State Police Department. Please identify yourself as an Early Start student when purchasing the permit. Please check the Early Start Program Parking Page for details on availability.
