Course Descriptions

There are three Early Start courses available at Fresno State. Students may choose either ESM 1 or ESM 3 for mathematics, while ESE 1 is available for English. Tuition fees for all three classes are covered by the Early Start fee waiver.

Early Start Developmental Mathematics (ESM 1)

University Catalog Description

Review of topics in algebra and geometry: percentages, ratios, radicals, exponents, linear equations and inequalities, equations of lines, factoring, solving equations, area, volume, angles, and similar triangles. CR/NC/RP grading only; not applicable towards baccalaureate degree requirements.

Exam

At the end of each 1-unit Early Start Math class, you will have the option to take a test that is equivalent to the ELM exam.  If you pass the test, you will be considered remediated and qualified to take your GE Area B4 Quantitative Reasoning course.

If you do not pass the test, you will have still fulfilled your Early Start requirement, but will need to take remedial mathematics courses during your freshman year.

Early Start Algebra II (ESM 3)
