What is a Nursing Loan?

The U.S. Department of Health Services provides the Nursing Student Loan program.  A long-term, low-interest 5 percent loan to full-time and half-time financially needy students pursuing a course of study leading to a baccalaureate or graduate degree in Nursing. Federal funds for this program are allocated to accredited public or non-profit nursing schools. The school is responsible for selecting the recipients of loans and for determining the amount of assistance a student requires.

Eligible students may borrow up to $2,500 per year for the first two years and $4,000 for the final two academic years, up to a $13,000 maximum.  Principal and interest payments are deferred until nine months after a recipient stops attending at least half time.

How do I Accept a Nursing Loan?

Loans not accepted within 30 days of the date of award, or the beginning of the semester whichever is latest, may be cancelled.

You must be awarded a Nursing Student Loan by the Financial Aid Office first.  Once awarded, your Nursing Student Loan Counselor must be contacted to facilitate the process.  Please go to  Instructions for further information.
