Admission Requirements

FALL 2012: Fresno State is impacted for First-Time Freshman. Please read the information provided below.

Applicants from the CSU Fresno-defined local area will be admitted based on CSU systemwide eligibility criteria. SAT or ACT scores are required for all students with a grade point average below a 3.00. SAT or ACT scores are recommended for all students with grade point average of 3.00 or higher. Test scores must be submitted by January 15, 2012. A list of schools in the CSU Fresno-defined local area can be found here (.pdf).

Freshman applicants from schools outside of the CSU Fresno-defined local area who are CSU eligible will be rank ordered by eligibility index and admission offers will be made in descending order of eligibility until the freshman class is full. SAT or ACT scores are required for all applicants from schools outside the local area. Test scores must be submitted by January 15, 2012.

A small percentage of the freshman class may be admitted based on eligibility index and additional characteristics including first generation college status, socioeconomic factors, skills or talents that align with or contribute to special university programs, and evidence of overcoming educational obstacles

All freshman applicants must complete the required subject matter requirements with grades of C or better by the date of high school graduation. Course requirements may not be completed during the summer after high school graduation.

CSU Fresno is also “impacted” in the Nursing program and in the Kinesiology-Athletic Training option.

It is easy to understand the California State University admission requirements for California residents. Admission offices at the 23 campuses use three factors to determine eligibility.

To be considered for admission, you must meet the standards in each of the following areas:

Subject Requirements

The CSU requires a minimum 15-unit pattern of courses for admission as a first-time freshman. Each unit is equal to a year of study in a subject area. A grade of C or higher is required for each course you use to meet any subject requirement.

Area Subject Years
a. History and Social Science (including 1 year of U.S. history or 1 semester of U.S. history and 1 semester of civics or American government AND 1 year of social science) 2
b. English (4 years of college preparatory English composition and literature) 4
c. Math (4 years is recommended) including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, or higher mathematics (take one each year) 3
d. Laboratory Science (including 1 biological science and 1 physical science) 2
e. Language Other than English (2 years of the same language; American Sign Language is applicable - See below about a possible waiver of this requirement) 2
f. Visual and Performing Arts (dance, drama or theater, music, or visual art) 1
g. College Preparatory Elective (additional year chosen from the University of California "A-G" list) 1
Total Required Courses 15

Waiver of "Language Other than English" Requirement

If you can demonstrate competency in a language other than English that is equivalent to or higher than that expected of students who have completed two years of language other than English study, you may be allowed a waiver to the foreign language requirement. For further information, contact the CSU campuses to which you are applying.

How to Make Up Missing Courses

If you didn't take all the required high school courses or earned D grades in some of them, you have several options to make up these courses and qualify for CSU admission. You can complete appropriate high school courses with a grade of C or better either in summer school or in adult school. Courses in this category must be those found on the high school or adult school UC "a-g" course lists. Some adult schools may not have a-g course lists.

You may also complete college courses with a grade of C or better in the missing subject areas. Finally, you can earn an acceptable score on examinations such as the SAT subject examinations, Advanced Placement examinations, or International Baccalaureate examinations.

If you are unable or do not choose to make up your subject deficiency, you may earn at least 60 units from a California Community College or other college and transfer as an upper-division transfer student, where only your college performance is considered for admission.

Subject Requirement Substitution for Students with Disabilities

All freshman applicants are encouraged to complete 15 units of college preparatory subjects. If you are otherwise qualified, but unable to complete certain subjects because of your disability, you should contact the director of Disabled Student Services at the CSU campus you wish to attend to receive further information about your eligibility to attend the campus.

Eligibility Index (Grades & Test Scores)

The Eligibility Index Table shows the combination of test scores and grade point averages required to meet minimum eligibility requirements. The CSU does not use the SAT Writing section or the ACT Writing score to calculate the CSU Eligibility Index.

You can calculate your eligibility index by multiplying your grade point average by 800 and adding your combined score on the SAT, using the combined scores earned on the critical reading and math sections. The CSU does not use the SAT Writing score for admission purposes. You may use the best score earned in individual test dates. Or, if you took the ACT, multiply your grade point average by 200 and add ten times the ACT composite score. The ACT composite score can be calculated using the best scores earned in individual test dates. ACT Writing score is not considered in the composite score.

If you apply for admission before you graduate from high school, you should compute your GPA using grades earned in a-g courses completed after the 9th grade. Do not include grades you expect to earn in courses during the remainder of 12th grade.

  • If you are a California high school graduate (or a resident of California for tuition purposes), you need a minimum eligibility index of 2900 using the SAT combined score for critical reading and math sections or 694 using the ACT.
  • Nonresidents of California are required to have a minimum eligibility index of 3502 (SAT) or 842 (ACT).

Graduation From High School

For admission to the CSU, graduation from high school and receipt of a high school diploma are admission requirements. If you are like most students, this is a logical conclusion of attending high school. So for most CSU freshman applicants, the other basic admission requirements — high school coursework and grades and test scores — need your attention.

Other Graduation Options

It is always best to stay in high school to complete your high school diploma. We realize that sometimes it is just not possible to do so. There are options available for completing the equivalent to a high school diploma. So if you cannot earn your diploma consider one of the following options.

  • Passing the California High School Proficiency Examination is the legal equivalent of earning a high school diploma.

  • The General Education Development program (GED) is another examination program that offers the equivalent of a high school diploma.

IMPORTANT! Remember that completing either the California High School Proficiency Examination or the GED does not eliminate the high school course requirements or the grades and test requirements.
