March 26 - Fresno State Thumped by Aggies in Semi's

Fresno State Men's Volleyball lost to the UC Davis Aggies (who eventually won the NCCVL Championships) 1-3 [19-25, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25].  The Dog's end the season 28-5, going into the National Championshps in Houston, TX, April 7-9.  This weekend, they will play an exhibition match against the Alumni on Saturday, April 2, 6 PM start.

 

March 19 - Fresno State Tames Tigers (UOP)

Fresno State Men's Volleyball team stayed unbeaten at home defeating the UOP Tigers 3-0, [25-15, 25-13, 25-12].  After going 6-2 at the NCCVL Mini-tournament and a long driving weekend splitting with Cal & Sonoma State, the Bulldogs seemed healed and ready for the NCCVL Championships next weekend at San Jose State.  

 

March 2 - Fresno State Bulldogs Ranked #1 in Nation

Fresno State Men's Volleyball team is Ranked #1 in the latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation poll. The Bulldogs received this honor for winning both tournaments (North/South Invitational, and the Far Westerns Tournament) that they entered, and going 20-1 on the season. Their only loss was to Orange Coast College that has scholarship players, which was avenged in the finals of the Far Western Tournament. The Bulldogs are also 6-0 in the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL). The Bulldogs are the only club team in the nation to have gone undefeated in against club volleyball teams. Indiana University (15-3), who won the Hoosier/Illini Classic this past weekend, is ranked #2.

 

 

February 26 - Fresno State Bulldogs Tame Mustangs

The Bulldogs Volleyball team (20-1) tamed the Mustangs of Cal Poly 3-1 [25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16].  The match started with a quartet of trumpets blasting the Star Spangled Banner, followed by a well-oiled offensive performance by the Bulldog offense.   Hunter Knight lead the Bulldogs with 23 kills and 2.5 blocks and 3 aces. Fellow Right side hitter, Chris Hughes had 12 kills and 3 assists. Jordan Burriss added 17 kills and 35 assists, while Ryan Sankey had 5 kills, 4 blocks and 22 assists.  Evan Horn scooped up 6 digs and Jared Jones added 5 more. 

 

February 20 - Fresno State Bulldogs Victorious at Far Westerns

The Bulldogs Volleyball (19-1) team avenged the earlier loss to Orange Coast College (13-1) in the championship match of the Far Western Volleyball Tournament 2-1 [25-16, 24-26, 15-13].  The match was terminated by an Evan Horn ace that grabbed the base line.  Fresno State reached the finals by getting past the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara 2-1 [25-16, 16-25, 24-22].  The Bulldogs caged the Cal Bears 2-0 [28-26, 27-25] in the quarterfinals. 

Earlier in the day, the Bulldogs cruised through the power-pools defeating Chico State 2-0 [25-20, 25-15] and Sonoma State 2-0 [25-19 and 25-23].

February 19 - Fresno State Bulldogs Bark Through Pool Play

The Fresno State Men's Volleyball team went 3-1 in pool play at the Far Western Volleyball Tournament, defeating three club teams (UC Merced, Santa Clara, and Sacramento State B-team), only falling to Orange Coast College.  In the AM wave, the Bulldogs bounced the Santa Clara Broncos 2-0 [25-21, 25-11]; then slashed the Bobcats of UC Merced 2-0 [25-15; 25-12]; Later Fresno State stung the Hornets of Sacramento State B-team 2-0 [25-9; 25-14].  The final match of the day, the Bulldogs lost to the likely State Community College champion, orange Coast College 0-1 [21-25, 21-25].  This was the first loss of the season for the Bulldogs (14-1) and against a college sponsored team.  On Sunday morning, the Bulldogs battle for the #1 seed in the Championship bracket against Chico State and University of Colorado. 

 

February 12 - Fresno State (11-0, 5-0 in NCCVL) stings the Hornets (Sac St) and plows the Aggies (UC Davis) over the weekend.  On Friday night, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start against the #14 ranked Aggies but found their zone and finished the match with a win 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-23-, 25-22).  On Saturday night, Fresno State defeated Sacramento State 3-0 (25-12, 27-25, 25-15).  The Bulldogs took care of their business in set 1, lost some focus in set 2, and finished strong in set 3, completing the sweep of their Delta road trip.  The Bulldogs are headed to the Far Western tournament this coming weekend. 

 

February 5 - Fresno State (9-0) tames the Lobos of Monterey Peninsula

The Bulldogs overpowered the Monterey Peninsula Lobos (3-0: 25-13; 25-15; 25-18) extending their run to 9-0.  Fresno State were lead by Hunter Knight and Jordan Burriss with 9 kills each, Burriss also added 20 assists.  Chris Hughes and Ryan Sankey had 8 kills each, with Sankey adding 15 assists and 10 digs.   

January 30 - Fresno State off to Fastest Start since 2004 National Championships Run (8-0, 3-0)

The Bulldogs conquered the Cardinal on Saturday night (3-1: 25-14, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16) at home in the South Gym.  Stanford took set 3 while Fresno State was trying to alter their serve receive.  Set 1 featured the Bulldogs giving up 6 service errors and a hitting error to provide Stanford with half the set 1 points.  The Bulldogs were lead by 12 kills from both Ryan Sankey and Hunter Knight, and MH Matt Nikkel added 11 more.  Strong service from Chris Hughes, who pounded 9 straight serves to start the match, jump started the Fresno State into a early and insurmountable lead in set 1.   

On Sunday, The Bulldogs bounced the Broncos of Santa Clara (3-0; 25-17, 25-19, 25-17).  Tough serving and a balanced offense kept the Broncos from getting a strong foothold during the match.

 

January 21 -

The Bulldogs are off to one of their fastest starts at 6-0, after defeating Chico State 3-0 (29-27, 25-13, 25-21) in their first Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League match.  In a slow start marked 12 errors, the Bulldogs kept Chico St (0-1 in NCCVL) in the set.  In set #2, the Redwave played like they did in the California Cup, dominating every aspect of the game: Serving, digging, and finishing with hitting.  Set #3 was well played by both teams making for the most interesting of the three sets. 

 

January 9 - Cal Cup Champions

Fresno State Men's Volleyball starts season with victory over a solid Columbia Bible College (British Columbia, Canada) 3-2 [25-23, 25-11, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11].  The bulldogs prepare for the North/ South tournament at Azusa Pacific's Felix Event Center (West Campus).

2010 Fresno City/county All Star Match

County rallies past City 3-2 (25-13, 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10).  First time All Star coach Scott Okada (Sanger) guided his team to victory.

Feb 28:  Fresno State Awakens for the first time this year at the NCCVL Mini-Tournament going 7-1.  The sole loss was to Cal on Saturday.  Team highlights were going undefeated Sunday against Cal Poly (2-1), Sac. St (2-0, and Santa Clara (2-0), plus an upset over League leading UC Davis (2-1).  The weekend brought the Bulldog record over 500 for the first time this season.  Next up is the NCCVL Championship tournament in Stanford this weekend, where the Bulldogs look to face the Sonoma state SeaWolves. 

 

Season off to a bumpy start!

Feb 13:  Fresno State takes its first 3-0 (W) match of the season against Chico State.  They then participated in the Far Westerns Tournament in the afternoon wave against Long Beach, NAU and Cal Blue, going 2-1 and reversing the Bulldog #3 seed in the 4-team pool.  The Chico match took the legs out of the Bulldogs who fell 0-3 on Sunday against Utah Valley, Davis, and Cal Poly II.

 

Feb. 6:  Slow victory over Santa Clara (3-2), after a fast 25-14 start, things slowed to a crawl (22-25, 21-25) before sailing out of the doldrums (25-21, 15-11).  Next up is against Chico (at UC Davis,  Hickey Gym 10 AM) before starting the Far Westerns in the ARC, at 3 PM and all day Sunday.

 

Jan 31.  Fresno State Men's Volleyball struggles through the weekend dropping two to the UC system (Davis (0-3) and Berkeley (0-3).  The bright side is that things can only improve. 

 

Jan 23.  Fresno State Men's team squeaks out a match against Sacramento State.  After winning the first two sets, the Bulldogs fell into a funk for the following two sets before regaining confidence and energy to win the match 15-10 in the 5th

 

Jan 17. The Bulldogs almost pulls out win in Cal Poly (19-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 13-15).  This freshman and sophomore are playing better each week, where they will soon be able to pull out the swing game.

April 11, 2009 – Fresno State Men’s Volleyball Wins National Title:

    Local Boys Do Good!!!

Fresno State Men’s Volleyball defeated University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to win the National Championship 2-1 (26-24, 25-27, 16-14). In game three, the Bulldogs trailed at the turn 8-7, and finally pulled even with the Titans at 12 all. A Bulldog hitting error at game point pulled the Titans even at 14. The Bulldogs Kit Maddox (1st Team All-Tournament) Kit Maddox stuffed blocked the ball to win at 16-14.

Fresno State’s Jake Wiens, who won the Tournament MVP, lead the Bulldogs with 14 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs and 2 assists. Kit Maddox (1st Team All-Tournament) had 7 kills, 4 digs and the game winning stuff block. Right Side Hitter Brett Gillen (Tournament Honorable Mention) had 6 kills, and two blocks. Freshman setter, Jordan Burriss (in his first year as a setter) had 21 assists and 4 digs. The second Right side hitter, Hunter Knight (also a frosh) hit 4 kills (in 4 attempts), hitting 1000; in addition, he added 2 digs and 4 assists.

 



In matches earlier in the day:

The Bulldogs defeated Boston College in the round of 16, University of Colorado in the quarterfinals and reigning 2008 National Champs Lakeland College in the semifinals (2-1: 18-25, 25-18, 15-12).

 

April 10 - Bulldog Victorious through Power Pools

    Fresno State Bulldogs  had two wins in the Powerpools to advance to the Championship round held on Saturday. The Bulldogs started by defeating #18 Penn St Nittany Lions 2-0 (25-19, 31-29). Fresno State pulled out a squeaker 2nd set 31-29, that ended with a solo block by LSH Kit Maddox who made a stunt block move on the right side.
    In the second powerpool match, The Bulldogs defeated #16 Navy Midshipmen 2-0 (25-15, 25-22). Navy defeated Penn State to reach the sweet 16 with the Bulldogs. the Bulldogs were led today by Kit Maddox with 21 kills and 7 blocks, and Jake Wiens with 19 kills. Jordan Burriss provided 43 assists through the 2 matches, with Jose Martinez adding 8 well timed digs.

 

April 9 - NCCS Pool Play Begins with 3 Wins

    Fresno State swept through pool play today winning three matches against U.Wisconsin-Whitewater, Rutgers and Notre Dame.  After a miscue in reffing assignments and a 1 game forfeit penalty, the Bulldogs battled the UW-Whitewater Warhawks 2-1(0-25, 25-18, 15-12).  Fresno State then routed Rutgers 2-0 (25-22, 25-17).  The Bulldogs the fought the Fighting Irish 2-0 (25-15, 25-14).

March 29 - Bulldogs NCCVL Champions

The Bulldogs Fresno State Men's Volleyball won the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL), (today in the South Gym at Fresno State) in a sweep of the Golden Bears of California 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22). The Bulldogs were lead by Kit Maddox (All-Conference 1st Team) 19 kills and 10 digs, Jake Wiens (NCCVL 2009 MVP) added another 15 kills and 10 digs. Brett Gillen (All-Conference 1st Team) named NCCVL Championship Tournament MVP, had 12 kills, 5 digs, and 2 assists. Jordan Burriss (All-Conference 2nd Team) directed the onslaught with 40 assists. In earlier in the afternoon, in NCCVL competition the Bulldogs pounded their way past Sacramento State in the first semi-finals 3-1 (23-25, 25- 13, 25-18, 25-18).

March 20 - Bulldogs ranked #1 in Nation

    After developing a 31-1 record, the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation has ranked Fresno State #1 in the country.  This number one ranking was defended today, while the Bulldogs rolled onward through Texas A&M (2-0:25-17 & 25-16), UC Irvine (2-0: 25-17, 25-10), and former #1 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2-0: 25-23, 25-18). 

 

March 8 - Bulldogs Finish Sweep of NCCVL Round Robin (@ Santa Clara University)

    Fresno State completed a sweep of the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball  League (NCCVL) at its mini-tournament warm-up for the National Championships in KC, MO.  This brings the Bulldog record to 31-1 overall and 15-0 in league.  The Bulldogs swatted the #9 Sacramento State Hornets (2-1: 21-25, 25-22, 15-10), and Sonoma State (2-0: 25-19, 25-21) in the morning session.  In the evening, Fresno State tamed the #29 Santa Clara Broncos (2-0: 25-19, 25-18) and #14 California Golden Bears (2-0: 27-25, 25-22).  Come see the Bulldog's last home league match this Saturday, March 14, in the South Gym at 7 PM.  

 

March 7 - Bulldogs Start NCCVL mini-tournament 4-0

    Fresno State increased its Northern California Collegiate Volleyball  League (NCCVL) record to 11-0 (27-1 overall).  During the days events, the Bulldogs defeated UC Davis 2-0 [29-27, 25-13]; Stanford 2-0 [28-26, 25-23], Cal Poly SLO 2-0 [27-25, 25-18]; and Chico State 2-0 [25-16, 25-21]. 

 

March 1 - Bulldogs Take Two from Pac-10 Rivals

    Fresno State took on the Northern California pair of Pac-10 rivals this weekend, defeating the California Bears 3-0 and the Stanford Cardinal 3-1.  Fresno State has only lost 6 sets all season, improving their record to 23-1, 7-0 in the NCCVL. 

 

February 22 - Bulldogs Dispatch Two NCCVL Opponents

    Fresno State defeated both Santa Clara and Chico State 3-0 ove the weekend.  The large hometown crowd were able to see all 15 team members get playing time against both teams.  The Bulldogs thank the Buchanan Bears and Madera South Stallions for rooting us on Saturday night.

 

February 15 - Fresno State Wins Far Westerns in Davis

    The Aggies hosted the 23rd Annual Far Western Volleyball Tournament and provided a venue for the Bulldogs to play all 14 team members (attending) while winning the tournament.  In the Finals, the Bulldogs defeated perennial rival Sacramento State (#11 ranked) 2-0 (25-22, 25-16).

In the morning power-pools, Fresno State defeated Chico St (2-0: 25-16, 25-14) and Sonoma State (2-0: 25-22, 25-13) in Power pools this morning.  In the Quarterfinals, the Bulldogs defeated the #4 (nationally ranked) Berkeley Bears 2-0 (25-14, 25-20). 
In the Semi-finals, Fresno State struggled past Utah Valley State (#25 ranked) 2-1 (25-23, 14-25, 15-10).
 
The Bulldog's next home match is Saturday, February 21, at 7 PM in the South Gym at Fresno State, where they face the #16th ranked Santa Clara Broncos.

 

 

February 8 - Bulldogs win Long Beach State Classic

    In the home of the 49ers, Fresno State Men's Volleyball Team defeated UCLA for the 2nd time on Sunday to take the Championship 2-0 [26-24, 25-18].    

                      

January 31 - Fresno State Drops First Set to Sacramento State

    At Sac State, Fresno State Men's Volleyball dropped its first set of the year before controlling the rest of the match, winning 3-1 over the Hornets [Scores: 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19].  The "Big Three" produced 45 kills (Jake Wiens, 19 kills & 5 digs; Kit Maddox, 13 kills & 4 digs; Brett Gillen, 13 kills, 6 digs & 6 assists). Setter Jordan Burriss added 2 kills, 8 digs and 46 assists.  The Bulldogs end the weekend 3-0 in the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League, while the Hornets drop to 2-1.

 

January 30 - Fresno State Holds off UC Davis

    In UC Davis, Fresno State Men's Volleyball held off the Aggies 3-0 [scores: 26-24, 25-14, 25-17].  Jake Wiens lead the Bulldogs with 13 kills (6 digs), followed by Kit Maddox with 12, and Brett Gillen with 11 (1.5 blocks, 5 digs).  Setter Jordan Burriss steered the team with 33 Assists and 2 blocks. 

 

January 25 -   Fresno State Defeats Cal Poly in Three

In less than 50 minutes, #3 ranked Fresno State Men's Volleyball dispatched #8 ranked Cal Poly SLO in the South Gym. Game Scores: 25-17, 25-17, 25-22. The Bulldogs were lead by OH's Jake Wiens (11 kills) and Kit Maddox (10 kills, 4 blocks, and 6 digs). Freshman setter Jordan Burriss guided the Bulldogs through the match with 30 Assists. First year player, Yayo Martinez (Sr) added 5 digs in the Bulldogs first sweep of the year. In a team effort, the Bulldogs recorded 14 blocks over the 3 set match.

 

January 22

   Fresno State named #3 in Pre-Season poll by the National Collegiate Volleyball Association, Inc.  Five additional teams from the NCCVL were also named to Nations 'Top 30'.
