Teaching Overseas

College-Based Study Abroad Programs

Individual colleges select two to three faculty members from various disciplines to accompany Fresno State students abroad.

USAC Visiting Professor

Fresno State is one of 33 member universities of the University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), which offers study abroad programs in 25 countries. With the permission of the Dean and Department chair, Fresno State faculty may apply to teach US students overseas. Contact:  Robert Hudgens, Study Abroad and International Exchanges, 278-6452

  • Must be full-time, returning to Fresno State after semester abroad
  • Available areas of study: Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Economics, Education, Environmental Sciences and Biology
  • Courses must relate to the region and be accessible to students from many majors
  • Language of instruction: English or the relevant foreign language
  • Teaching load is two 3-credit courses
  • Regular salary and benefits continue from Fresno State while overseas
  • USAC provides airfare and assistance in locating housing

Rotary Grants for University Teachers

The Rotary Foundation and District 5230, which consist of Fresno, Tulare, Kings and Monterey Counties, sponsor a grant program to strengthening higher education in low-income countries. Grant recipients teach at universities and colleges in developing countries, sharing their knowledge and expertise. Subjects taught must have practical use in the host countries where positions are open.  A list of eligible countries and application forms can be found at Rotary Grants for University Teachers.

Summer Teaching in Japan or Korea

Fresno faculty have the opportunity to teach one of the articulated undergraduate courses in General Education in Tokyo, Japan or in Seoul, Korea for three weeks each summer. Faculty apply for these assignments through the Study Abroad Office. Dirk Binder, Program Liaison Officer in Tokyo, coordinates the programs at the Kanda Institute of Foreign Studies and with Konkuk University in Seoul. Japanese and Korean students enroll through Fresno State’s Continuing and Global Education.  Campuses abroad cover travel, room and board. Contact:  Robert Hudgens, Study Abroad and International Exchanges, 278-6452

Non-credit Travel  Study  Programs

The Division of Continuing and Global Education partners with TraveLearn, an external agency that focuses on non-credit educational programs for working professionals, students and retirees. Programs are 10-15 days in length, with participants covering all travel costs.
