ENGLISH PLACEMENT AND ENTRY LEVEL MATH (EPT/ELM)
The California State University requires you to take the EPT and/or the ELM after admission and PRIOR to enrollment in a California State University unless you are exempt by means of scores earned on other appropriate tests such as the SAT and ACT. The EPT and ELM are not admission tests; instead, they determine placement in specific courses. If you are required to take the EPT/ELM, you must do so before you can register. Students who need remediation are required to complete their remedial course(s) by the end of the first year of enrollment.
You may take the tests at the California State University campus where you will enroll or a CSU campus near you. There are many testing dates to choose from.
The EPT contains the following three sections:
- Essay: 45 minutes-one assigned topic;
- Reading Skills: 30 minutes - 45 multiple choice questions
- Composing Skills: 30 minutes - 45 multiple choice questions
The ELM consists of one section: 50 multiple choice questions to be completed in 90 minutes.
