University High School is a 9th –12th grade free public charter high school located on the campus of California State University, Fresno. UHS provides an accelerated college preparatory education to approximately 400 students who share a common interest in music. Students receive a strong foundation in music and the liberal arts and sciences in a small high school environment, while benefiting from the opportunities available on a large public university campus.
We are very proud to note that in the December 2007 issue of U.S. News & World Report, UHS was ranked the 36th best public high school and the 5th best charter high school in the nation.
UHS has spaces available for incoming junior students in 2009-10. Students who have completed two years of high school and want to transfer to UHS to finish their high school career are welcome to apply. Incoming juniors have the opportunity to enroll in Fresno State courses and complete a rigorous college-prep curriculum that will prepare them for the college of their future with a diploma from UHS, a nationally recognized school. Interested junior transfer applications will be processed until the end of the school year, June 5, 2009. Interested students should call 278-1113 for further information.
Progress on New BuildingOn January 15th UHS conducted the bid opening for our new building. This process helped to identify the future contractor for our new school. UHS has now taken every step it can towards beginning construction. Because State funds are on hold, UHS must now wait for a budget resolution. When the state does resolve its budget and we are given a timeline for the arrival of our funds, UHS will evaluate our start date, officially name our contractor, and move forward. The new school will take 14 months to complete. In April a contract was signed with Zumwalt construction as general contractor. Once state funds are received construction could begin this summer.
Budget Crisis Is No Crisis for UHSThe state budget crisis has resulted in school construction delays. But our school’s operating budget cuts will not result in any changes. School districts in the valley have been cutting back, releasing teachers and making drastic cuts. UHS is not in this position and envisions no such actions. As long as parents continue to meet the pledges they made to make a $600 contribution to UHS this year and try to support the spring gala, we will not suffer any adverse fiscal issues.
