Development
UHS is very excited that we have kicked off our 10th school year and that more than ever things are going well. For the last three years US News and World Report has indicated that we are one of the top high schools in the country. Our students are excelling in the classroom and in August we broke ground on our new facility. The new building will include 37,500 square feet and provide 22 classroom spaces, including 4 science labs, three music performance rooms and a physical education room.
But building our school and running our educational program does cost money. As a charter school we do have limited funding and are expected to pay for things other schools do not. Because of this we have two fundraising campaigns. We ask parents to contribute to our Annual Fund that serves to defray operating costs and allows us to provide our comprehensive program with its small class sizes, 48 books program, extra classes and programs. We also have a Building Fund that is designed to support the construction and maintenance of our new state of the art facility. Parents can contribute online to either fund by clicking on the donate link.
Annual Fund Report Update
Quarterly Report November 17, 2009
What a wonderful year this has been so far at UHS. School is humming and an excellent Magic of the Arts all-school performance just dazzled a packed Saroyan Theatre. Students are engaged in more activities than ever before and come Thanksgiving, I hope you agree that we will all have something to be thankful for.
Our Annual Fund drive kicked off this past August. Our Annual Fund supports our school program, because our program differs from a traditional high school in some very specific ways:
- Our class sizes are considerably smaller and our students take more classes than at any local high school.
- Our students can attend CSU Fresno.
- Each student is given a free award-winning book a month to read (48 books program)
- Our student-to-counselor ratio is the lowest in town.
As parents, we love the UHS program but it does cost more than a traditional school and with the recent state of California budget cuts we have 10% less money to work with than in previous years. We don’t want to cut anything so we have devised our annual fund, with the intent of raising what we need to support our current program.
This year our target was to raise $180,000 from our community. For the first quarter of this year we have collected $104,784 with $70,841 more in pledges. With all the pledges fulfilled it will leave us just short of our goal, with $175,625 in total collections.

Thank you very much to those who have fulfilled their contributions; thank you also to those of you still working to fulfill yours; and to those of you that have not yet had a chance to make a contribution, any contribution would be helpful. Just imagine if everyone would pledge at least $10 we would have 100% participation. Overall we are pleased with the generosity of our parents and I look forward in future updates to tell you we have achieved our goal for the year and that we have increased our student/parent participation. Please remember that using the SaveMart S.H.A.R.E.S. Card we sent you earlier this fall, or the Target plan, are easy ways to make a contribution to the school; and we do have more of the cards in the UHS office.
Building Fund Update

“School of Dreams Campaign”
UHS is very excited that we will be breaking ground on our new facility. It will include 37,500 sq. feet and provide 22 classroom spaces including 4 science labs, three music performance rooms and a Physical Education room. While we have state money to build, we are a long-way from having all the money we need to furnish and equip our school. In the 2007-08 school year the School of Dreams campaign designed to support the new building raised $200,000. We hope to exceed this in the 2008-09 school year
