Why Chargebacks
are Necessary
University
Communications and other university departments and units must charge
for services above baseline support services. We do this to recover
costs not budgeted to our department. We must charge service fees
to:
- Partially recoup salaries and fees of graphic artists, photographers
and others whose services are in great demand.
- Help purchase supplies, student services and occasional other
services required to produce high-quality materials
for units throughout the campus.
- Recover the indirect costs of providing materials requested.
- Help fund necessary equipment upgrades and replacements.
- Attain consistency with the chargeback systems already in
place at the university print shop and the photo studio.
- Itemized services for which chargebacks will be requested:
- Development, writing and design of university publications,
specifically those beyond a designated baseline
of essential publications services.
- Photography services, specifically those beyond a baseline
of essential services.
- Web site development, specifically those beyond a baseline
of essential services.
- Baseline or core services for which no chargebacks will be requested:
- Initial consultations on publication, writing and design.
- Assistance with university graphic standards, logos, seals
and campus maps. Major revisions of university maps and visitors' guides may be subject to chargebacks.
- General publicity services and news dissemination services,
both for internal and external audiences.
- Photography for newsworthy events. (Requests for extra
prints may be subject to charge.)
- Rate schedule
- Existing services will be
involved in the chargebacks:
- Some for which no charge was previously made.
- Others for which the office of Teaching, Learning and Technology was charging
prior to a reorganization that transferred
some of their personnel into this area.
- Implementation date: January 4, 1999
- Off-campus availability and costs: Customers
could purchase some of the same goods and services off campus, but
the University Communications staff provides special knowledge of the university,
easy access to campus graphics and communications standards, and photography
archives related to the campus. The cost for graphics and writing
assistance off campus ranges from $90 to $150 per hour. Professional
off-campus photography services begin at $80 per hour plus the cost
of film and processing. On average, the Office of University Communications
could provide many of the services on the attached sheet
for approximately 50 to 60 percent less than clients could obtain the
services from off-campus vendors.
