W Courses at CSU Fresno
Created to assure that students are prepared to write in their upper division coursework and in their chosen professions after graduation, W courses are designed to teach students advanced rhetorical skills for communicating in writing. Currently the university schedules 16 different W courses across a variety of disciplines. Some W courses may be required for students in certain degree programs while other W courses are offered to satisfy the Upper-Division Writing Skills requirement.
Because too often "writing intensive" means little more than "with longer papers," this site is devoted to helping faculty across the disciplines at CSU Fresno develop successful writing courses. Included here are links to department specific objectives and resources for W courses taught on the CSU Fresno campus, as well as general links to sites that support teaching and learning. While our specific goal is to provide support for W course instructors and, thereby, improve the quality of students' writing, we also hope this site will be useful to all faculty members looking for ways to teach and use writing more effectively in their courses.
This page is sponsored and maintained by the Subcommittee on Writing Competency. If you have questions about W courses and do not find the answers below, please contact the Writing Competency Subcommittee Chair.
